Let’s assume for a moment that you are a rising, young political power looking to help with City’s lack of leadership problem. Given this information, the most sensible thing a person could do is try and serve on one of the City’s many boards and commissions. Sounds easy enough, right? Well, not quite.
The City conveniently lists all of the existing boards and commissions for easy reference. The first problems is that only five of the boards have a listing of members. Within those five boards there are listed TWELVE members whose terms have expired. It’s completely possible that those members have had their terms extended. It’s also possible that those positions have been filled by other people, or better yet, are still vacant.
If I were in charge, I’d consider this an embarrassment. It seems silly to suggest that, but there are so many people upset with the lack of leadership on the fourth floor they can’t afford any mistakes. Not screwing up the Water Street Project is difficult. Not keeping the City’s web site up-to-date is not.
Fixing the web site is easy. Getting more people to shop downtown or trust the members of City Council is going to be a lot harder, but I’ll tell you how to fix those problems too.
