What to do? What to do?
Brian Wilson, the only musical icon living today that approaches the genius category, was in town tonight to perform his long-lost masterpiece “Smile” at the Michigan Theatre in Ann Arbor. Those of you may recall that, The Beach Boys’ chef d’oeuvre, “Pet Sounds,” was released on May 7th in 1966. The Beatles responded with “Revolver.” Wilson, feeling competition from the Beatles as well as Phil Spector and his Wall of Sound, answered with “Smile.” Set for release in spring of 1967, Capitol had printed nearly one hundred thousand copies before Wilson inexplicably pull the plug. Two weeks later, the Beatles released “Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band,” and the music world was changed forever. “Smile” has since been in the can for the past thirty-seven years.
The Ann Arbor show was only the fourth stop on his US tour. Feeling the gravity of such a history-making event, I decided to stay home and focus on getting caught up on my cartoon reading. That Bucky Katt is one crazy guy.
Forgive me Brian for I have sinned. I’ll catch you next time.
