If you read this stuff on a regular basis, then you know about my passion for international soccer — or football as we like to say. I decided to take the opportunity of having a couple days off for Easter and drive down to Mexico City to catch some World Cup qualifying action between the US and Mexico. I figured if I could beat the traffic, it would only take me about seven hours to drive there. For some reason, my calculations were off and I didn’t even make it to St. Louis. I ended up spending the entire weekend holed up in a Motel 6 watching the action on television. In the end, the United States extending its streak of not having won on Mexican soil to 71 years. They did score to end their 22 year scoring drought. The final score was 2-1. The game was marred by fans chanting “Osama, Osama” at the American players, but the Osama chants weren’t nearly as bad as they were last year in Guadalajara. In the end, I think I discovered that my real passion is Arena League Football and I should have gone to Grand Rapids to see the Rampage instead.
As this month draws to a close, it looks like my pleas for funding for Riverside Park fell on mostly deaf ears. I was able to guilt a handful of people into donating some money including one City Council Member. I guess when it comes to supporting Ypsilanti, a lot of people would rather wait for the beer guys to come up with the six grand. Yeah, that’s right. I’m talking about you. Well, this apathy isn’t going to make begging people to support the Rutherford Pool fundraiser at Frenchies this Friday any easier. Seriously now people, there isn’t anyone else. It’s up to us.
