If you go to Brian Wilson’s web site and donate at least $100 towards Hurricane Katrina releif efforts, the enigmatic genius will not only match your donation, but he’ll call you up on the telephone and personally thank you for the donation.
I’m not totally sure of what kind of phone call it is, but I’m hoping to ask him a couple of questions about him finally releasing “Smile” to the public after shelving it nearly 30 years ago. It’s probably a touchy subject, but I would like to know why he chose to re-record the music to that album instead of using the original soundtrack created by himself and the Beach Boys. Out of pure respect, I’d promise to stay away from inflammatory questions regarding John Stamos from “Full House” fame touring with the Beach Boys and playing drums. I had thought of trying to freak him out and convince him the Devil was in his telephone receiver with the hopes of acquiring part of his publishing royalties like his old psychiatrist Eugene Landy did in the 80s, but that’d just be cruel.
I am going to ask him if maybe he’s willing to do a Town Hall meeting or something. He can’t be any worse than Alma Wheeler Smith or Liz Brater. Besides, he may even do “Heroes & Villians” for the crowd.
