Freebasing On The East Side

My neighborhood is home to a new resident.

A new crack house has opened two blocks from my house. Well, if you count the half blocks, this new business is probably more along the lines of three blocks away. I can imagine a bunch of my neighbors scrambling to find a map and draw a three block radius around my house trying to figure out where it is.

It’s cool. You probably haven’t noticed them unless you buy crack. Customers jump over the fence in the back yard in order to make their way to the house. As a result, street traffic is rather limited.

The funny thing about all of this is the property is owned by a bank. Having branched out from high-interest credit card rates, this Fortune 46 company is now dabbling in the crack trade. Okay. That’s a little harsh. I doubt they know what their tenant is doing.

But that’s the point. They should know to whom they are renting.

The Ypsilanti Police Department knows about this property and the activities going on there. They drive around the place several times each night. I have no doubt they will have it shut down quickly.

I was fortunate enought to cruise around with one of the officers a week or so ago, and they showed a pretty strong presence there. At one point, the proprietor of said crack house came out onto the porch.

For what it’s worth, I don’t believe he was asking for a second chance.
