The Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti are off to capturing the 2009 Frontier League title after an impressive victory against the Traverse City Beach Bums in exhimbition play last night.
MIDWEST SLIDERS OF YPSILANTI OPEN EXHIBITION SERIES WITH 7-2 WIN OVER BEACH BUMS
The Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti opened their three-game exhibition series Friday night with an impressive 7-2 win.
The Sliders jumped on starter Steve Roberts in the first inning when Zack Pace opened the game with a single, moved to third on an errant pick-off attempt, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Sam Deluca.
The Sliders made it 3-0 with two second-inning runs. Chelsea’s Jimmy Baker lashed a one-out single to center and moved to second on a wild pitch. Dennis Jones reached on a fielder’s choice, stole second, and both runners scored when Maikel De La Rosa singled to left.
The Beach Bums got one back in the bottom of the second as John Alonso homered off the scoreboard in left against Midwest starter James Albury. Albury threw four innings to earn the win, striking out five.
Roberts allowed another run in his final inning as Dom Lombardi led off with a double and scored on an RBI single by Ralph Rosas. Roberts threw four innings and was saddled with the loss after allowing four runs on six hits.
Alonso contributed to the second run as well for the Beach Bums. Patrick Perry doubled with two outs in the bottom of the fourth and Alonso followed with an RBI opposite-field single. Midwest rounded out the scoring by touching Jeff Williams for three runs in the seventh, two of which came home on a double by Jimmy Baker.
