Overshadowed by the death of Pope John Paul II last weekend was the 18th anniversary of Buddy Rich‘s death. 18th anniversaries don’t usually have the fanfare that a 25th or 50th might have, but if ever there should have been a parade or something, there should have been one for Rich. I spent the day in the basement listening to his 1955 classic “Krupa & Rich” with Gene Krupa. Looking back on things, I should have been listening to 1959’s “Rich Versus Roach,” but sometimes we aren’t thinking clearly in times of grief.
